Department Overview
The Children's Minnesota Department of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) is committed to advancing the health of infants, children, and adolescents through high-value, evidence-based, family-centered care within the hospital and across health systems to promote the health and equity of all children. We partner with the University of Minnesota Pediatrics, Medicine/Pediatrics Residency, and multiple regional Family Medicine Residency Programs to offer broad-based training in pediatrics in the inpatient setting. Integrated with our educational activities, these programs provide hands-on learning to equip graduates with the skills they'll need as future advocates of children's health.

Position Summary
The Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Department at Children's Minnesota is seeking compassionate and skilled Pediatric Chief Resident Moonlighters for the 2026 - 2027 academic year from the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics.

Shift Details
  • $115.24/hour
  • Shifts: variable, mostly MD helper shifts (MF2, SF2, MN2) or admitting shifts, occasional daytime rounding shifts, Monday to Sunday
  • Scheduling minimums: goal of 6 shifts per contract year
This role is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating pediatric patients while delivering high quality care that meets state, federal, and national standards. The physician will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary care team to support patient recovery, prevent future illness, and promote overall health and wellness.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care (90%)
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat hospitalized pediatric patients
  • Prescribe and administer medications, therapies, vaccinations, and other medical treatments
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and review medical records
  • Monitor patient conditions, treatment responses, and adjust care plans as needed
  • Maintain accurate and thorough patient documentation, including medical histories and examination results
  • Communicate clearly with patients and families regarding diagnoses, procedures, and treatment plans
  • Provide health education, wellness guidance, and preventative care recommendations
  • Refer patients to specialists or additional healthcare resources when appropriate
  • Collaborate closely with nurses, pharmacists, social workers, therapists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of clinical staff, residents, students, and assistants
Administrative & Leadership (10%)
  • Participate in the development and delivery of healthcare programs and standards
  • Support community and institutional health and safety initiatives
  • Train and mentor residents, medical students, and healthcare providers as appropriate
  • Prepare required medical and regulatory documentation
  • Contribute to clinical or medical research to advance patient care and treatment outcomes
Qualifications Required
  • M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree from an accredited institution
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Pediatrics (American Board of Pediatrics)
  • Current Minnesota Medical License or ability to obtain one
  • Eligibility for credentialing with hospital and third-party payers

  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in caring for hospitalized children
  • Strong diagnostic, examination, and clinical decision-making skills
  • In-depth knowledge of medications, side effects, and contraindications
  • Thorough understanding of medical guidelines, regulations, and best practices

  • Commitment to patient confidentiality, integrity, and ethical practice
